Intention, Attention & Sacred Reciprocity: How to Prepare for Plant Medicine

I grew up in Ecuador, surrounded by the Andes and the Amazon. Two of the most medicine-rich landscapes on Earth.
And I had no idea.
Sacred plants were just "drugs" to me. That's what I was taught. Generations of colonization, the Inquisition, the Church, all of it created shame around indigenous identity and ancestral knowledge. So even though I was living in a country with living traditions that go back thousands of years… I had no relationship with any of it.
I was surrounded by medicine. And I couldn't see it.
When I eventually found my way to these plants, it wasn't through lineage or ceremony. It was through curiosity. Through books. Through sitting alone in silence and letting the medicine teach me.
And over years of that practice, I learned something I now consider one of the most important principles on this entire path:
Before you do anything, ask yourself: why.
Not in some abstract spiritual way. Practically.
Because the intention behind what we do changes everything. And working with sacred plants is no different. It's not an experience. It's a relationship. And a relationship requires clear intention.
I go deep into this in our newest episode, my own story, the mistakes, the breakthroughs, and the question I think everyone should sit with before they ever enter ceremony.
